Route 99: Section 8; cycling Einsiedeln to Zug , Switzerland

STATS: Einsiedeln (900m) – Zug(425m)– 45km long, with some natural terrain (800m H gain, 1,250m opposite direction). For more info see https://schweizmobil.ch/en/cycling-in-switzerland/route-99/stage-8 This Section shares some of its path with the Route 9:07

September / October 2023

I split this Section in 2 days, stopping for the night at a dear friend’s place in Unterageri.  Indeed, my departure from Einsiedeln was actually on the same day that I biked Route 9:07, to loop back to Unterägeri for the night (yes quite long day).

Monastery at Einsiedeln

Thus, after peeking at the famous monastery of Einsiedeln and its Black Madonna , full of pilgrims and activity, I take the direction back towards Zug on 99:08.

Einsiedeln views from the hills on 99:08

This is a much more up and down road, typically made for electric bikes. Although the path passes through the same region of 9:07, the landscape is much quieter and bucolic and at a slightly higher elevation, which is typical of the HeartRoute.

The roads are small countryside paths, at times on natural terrain through mires, and away from traffic; not coasting the Ageri lake but passing on the hills north of it with great panoramic views of the Agerisee.

AGERISEE / Lake Ageri

Autumnal colors are all around me.
Overall, it was a tough yet relaxing ride in beautiful weather.

Needless to say, after a total 70km and 1,200m elevation gain for the day, which included the ride from Baar to Einsielden on 9:07, I arrived exhausted at my friend’s house in Unterägeri!

On Day-2, I complete the 99:08 from Unterägeri to Zug .
This is an easy 14km ride, with just 140m H gain, though with some brief steep hills.

Once reached the plateau overlooking Zug and its lake (Zugersee), the road then descends continuously for the last 4km until the city of Zug.

And the train station is within reach!
