April 2019

I chilled to the bone today! I did not expect this cold weather on a sunny April day & low altitudes and I was not dressed for it….

At least, I had opted to stay close to home and explore this rural regional route in Suisse Romande, through gentle hills of farmland and pastures.

Part of this section, from Romont to Oron, is also shared with Heartroute 99:01 , which was the very first trail of my biking challenge back in 2016. So, although I generally don’t like to revisit the same routes, this was far back enough for a second look……

The only major sightseeing along this route is in Romont. From the train station, I climbed the steep road to the old part of the village, where the 15th century church and the 13th century Savoy castle with the Stain Glass Museum (unique in Switzerland) are located.

The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption near the Castle was rebuilt in the 15th century after a fire and is a beautiful example of Gothic church, certainly worth visiting.

Romont is also situated on the pilgrimage path to St-Jacques de Compostelle and has seen pilgrims since the Middle Age.

About halfway one finds the tiny medieval village of Rue with a small castle perched on a hill. The castle can be seen from the countryside for kilometers away.
